Most everyone is familiar with the common jobs for foreigners in China such as teaching English in a private English training center or university, managerial or technical positions in a multinational company, owning export companies, etc. However, there are lesser known, somewhat clandestine jobs occasionally available for foreigners not often talked about… until now.

After meeting Vivinia and JoJo, I made the requisite phone call telling Vivinia how nice it was to meet them the previous night. Vivinia would be returning to Australia in a few weeks, so I had my sights set more on JoJo with her near zero English. There was little expectation on my part I would see either of them again, until two days later when my phone rang.

As many people outside the USA know, Thanksgiving Day is one of America’s most important and popular holidays along with Christmas Day. But, what about the American expat in China or Asia on Thanksgiving Day which falls on November 24th this year?

Hooter’s of Chengdu, or any Hooter’s worldwide, is by no stretch of the imagination what you would characterize as a classic pick-up joint or “Meat Market”. However, for the keen observer, there are often targets of opportunity to be investigated and explored.

A foreigner doesn’t need to be in China very long to notice everywhere a daily abundance of “Targets of Opportunity”. While this can be an advantage, or a plus, those in-country have over those relegated to developing relationships purely online, it has some downsides.

China is littered with the bones of foreigners, or the walking wounded, from direct hits by the M-Bomb. Almost any foreigner boots on the ground in China had either something similar happen to them, or one of their friends. It happens far too often and I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of these Chinese women.

I took V to my favorite “Haunt”, “Second home” or “Other office”, AKA Chengdu Hooter’s, for the first time. We were having an enjoyable conversation in limited English, and with the assistance of an electronic translator and the friendly Hooter’s girls occasionally acting as translators. About 10pm, her phone rang.

There is an important question all you foreign men need to ask that special woman you’ve met regardless if online or in person. From the outset, other than common questions like name, place residing, job, etc., you need to ask this question quickly before wasting your time, energy, emotions and of course, your hard earned money.
