Brad Pitt (46), Johnny Depp (45) and Keanu Reeves (46) lament. Jasmine Huang will have nothing romantic to do with you. A Chinese woman in her late-twenties and a blogger for CLM, she explained in a recent posting that, although she “doesn’t have anything against people of advanced age,” she has set her upper limit for males at age forty.

Freud famously claimed not to know what women want. I am not saying I have a leg up on the father of psychoanalysis. But I do think if you read the profiles of the Chinese women on the site, you can come away with some clues about the sort of character traits that are in high demand. I’ve touched on this topic before, but it’s worth devoting an entire entry to.

Turning on my computer this morning I see on Yahoo that a college professor in Nanjing, Ma Yaohai, has been sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison for “group licentiousness” for participating in group sex parties. It’s the first I've heard of the story (one of the drawbacks of being away from China is that you tend to miss all the good stuff), although supposedly the case has attracted huge public interest in China.

As long as we are on the subject of interviews (see the last two posts), I can’t resist including a portion of a recent conversation I had with S, a waitress at the Chengdu Hooters. I had gone to Hooters that morning for two reasons. No, not those two. Their restaurant was one of the few places in this corner of Sichuan province where you could get a full American breakfast and a wireless connection.

This is the second part of an interview with one of the many twenty-somethings on the website. I'd encourage you to read the first part of this interview before starting in here, but no points will be deducted from your score if you fail to do so. With that warning, here is part deux:

I mentioned in my previous post that the last time I was in China I conducted interviews with some twenty-somethings on the site. Z was one of these. She had agreed to meet me in one of the two thousand Starbucks that seem to exist in Chengdu (actually the number is closer to 12). Z arrived on time and, except for the fact that she had cut her hair, she looked exactly like her picture. Although in the profile Z’s age was listed at twenty-seven, like many Chinese women she could have been taken for much younger.

I think one of the things that strikes most men who log into this site for the first time is the number of beautiful young Chinese women who are seeking marriage. My guess is that many guys are like me in being suspicious about why so many truly beautiful young women would have to resort to a website where they can meet foreign guys. One possible explanation—that they are scammers who are going to hit you up for money or golddiggers looking for a sugar daddy—does not reflect well on the website, or on humanity, for that matter.

Do you remember the old Arby’s commercial? Different is good was its catchphrase. Well, this is the theme for today. Chinese women are different than American women. Making this assertion has sometimes landed me in hot water, though mostly with non-Chinese.

To those familiar with the intricacies of many American online dating services, the methodology of ChinaLoveMatch can seem incredibly crude. In contrast to the lengthy questionnaires and personality profiles of such sites as eharmony and match.com, CLM requires you to submit only the most basic personal information along with a few statements about yourself and your ideal mate. How, you might ask, can such a slender set of facts lead to a lifelong match?
