The old saying, "to really know someone, walk a mile in their shoes", is very true, and in hope to bridge the gap of understanding between the western and eastern, I would highly recommend viewing this movie. I want to find a Chinese saying about this,here I find two," 知人知面不知心" =zhi ren zhi mian bu zhi xin = clothes make a man, and "画龙画虎难画骨"= hua long hua hu nan hua gu= it is hard to paint a dragon and tiger's bone.
I guess they have nearly the same meaning.
You recomend people viewing the movie. You know it is only a scene in China. And I think it happens in any developing country in the world, especially with large population.
By the way, Slum Dog is a good film,too.

There is a comedy based on this same topic with two guys trying to get home during Spring Festival that was a cute film. Lost on Journey (2010) 人在囧途, directed by Yip Wai-Man.

Just watched "Last Train Home", thanks for the info, I enjoyed it, any more movies like this? Anything based around true life and living?
I looked into the other movie, "Lost on Journey", can't seem to get any English subtitles for it, will have to leave that one for the future.

I love some of the historically based action adventures like "Hero", but my favourite Chinese film is "A World Without Thieves" which shows a nice mix of life in Urban wealthy China as compared to rural impoverished China all within a clever story. There's also a great movie that involves online dating to some degree but I'll have to rediscover the name of it unless someone out there can remind me.

Meg, we also have the saying 'clothes make the man' but the meaning of 'Walk a mile in their shoes' is 'to know someone we must live their life for a while'. To know China we Western men must read, watch the right movies, talk with Chinese people and listen very carefully. The movie 'Mao's Last Dancer' might not be popular in China but what it protrayed about what happened to the family of the dancer is accurate. I met people in China who had such experiences or watched their parents suffer the same shaming. Those times still have echoes in the soul of China. It is also important to understand just what Western nations did to China for decades before and during the Second World War. For that there might be no better book than Lin Yutang's 'Moment in Peking'. It should shame us.
